Early Warning Signs of Breast Cancer You Should Never Ignore

Breast cancer continues to be one of the worst and most likely to lead to death illnesses for women, which consequently affects a lot of women all around the globe. The importance of early diagnosis cannot be overstated, as it is the main reason for successful treatment; thus, the recognition of the early signs of breast cancer is of the highest priority.

Detecting Early Symptoms

  1. Lump in the Breast: An underarm or breast lump is the most common early sign of breast cancer. Although not every breast lump turns out to be cancerous, it is still strongly recommended that you consult a doctor if you notice any strange or new lump. Is there a possibility that a lump in my breast indicates breast cancer?

It’s crucial to conduct regular self-breast examinations to familiarize oneself with the sensation of healthy breasts.

  1. Changes in the size or shape of the breasts: The most common early signs of breast cancer are changes in the size or shape of the breast, which happen most of the time. What are the conditions related to the size and shape of the breasts that could signal cancer? Also, the skin might undergo changes, such as getting dimpled or swollen or having fine lines forming.

Breast appearance changes should always be reported to a doctor who would perform a diagnosis, as this step is very important.

  1. Nipple Discharge: If the discharge is clear or bloody, it may be a sign of breast cancer. Is there a pattern of discharge from the breast nipples that is more commonly linked to breast cancer?

It is better to consult a physician, even if another reason for the nipple discharge exists, to exclude breast cancer.

Myths and Truths Related to Breast Cancer

Myth: Only women can suffer from breast cancer.

Truth: Although there is still a common misconception about this disease being restricted to women, the truth is that men can get breast cancer as well.

Myth: Only family history can lead one to breast cancer.

Truth: A family history of breast cancer may increase your risk, but it is still possible to get the disease even if there is no family history.

The early recognition of breast cancer can dramatically enhance the results of the medical treatment and patient survival. Knowing the early signs of breast cancer and getting medical analysis right away are the measures that you can take to defend your health forcefully. Be alert; it is very important that you do not turn a blind eye to any odd symptoms and breast changes. If you perceive any worrying signs, go straight to a medical expert for a more detailed evaluation.

Five Minutes of Inspiration

When I finished surgical training and started my career in Oncology (which was purely by chance), I was not sure, if this is where I wanted to be. Oncology grew on me and I subspecialized in Breast Cancer… and surely, this did not dawn on me, suddenly. I was truly inspired… by my mentor who had oodles of energy, could work for 16 hours without a break, dreamt only big, smiled always, would rarely ever get upset and most importantly had the TIME, to inspire! I was fortunate as I could just share space with him and get inspired and motivated to do my thing.

That was about 23 years ago and as the years rolled by and as mountains beyond mountains kept getting captured, there is one thing that shrank, abysmally – TIME. There are times when the chips are down when you want to go into rewind mode when you want to dig out those words of inspiration and want that little nudge or push…. To start dreaming again and building again, and getting to yet another level of uncharted territory. All that you need is those 5 minutes of inspiration to ignite those dreams, that simmer below the surface without taking off…..5 MINUTES…..is it asking for too much?

How many of you have felt like that?

Breast-Cancer-Awareness-Month-Event-No.-4-The-Grand-Finale-1280x1024.jpg

ART OF COOKING

Curtains were brought down on a month-long Breast Cancer Awareness campaign at Max Vaishali, in exemplary fashion. You would have been witness to several cookery shows but this event surely surpassed any that I have witnessed in the past. There were 9 teams with 4 participants each and they were all Champions, those who had been through the experience of breast cancer. Some, who were 10 years past the disease and others who were on treatment. Most of them prepared but one team came together just then.. Spirited, talented, creative with magic in their hands. ?‍??‍??‍??‍??‍?Each team decorated it’s stall, collected items from the food counters to put together a drink, a starter, a salad and a dessert. ???

Then what happened was sheer magic. The judges Chief Dietician at Max Saket, Ritika Samaddar RD and Celebrity Chef Saby Gorai were at a loss. They had a tough time judging the competition. Thank you for being there.

They were all winners. They won the competition and many hearts. They suffused the space with such positivity that it will be some time before we are able to replicate this energy.????♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Thanks is due to the each participant… you made us all so proud, to Dr. Gaurav Aggarwal Jatin Verma and Vanshikha for giving wings to this dream event, to Sushila Kasana Jainer and Archana Mann for coaxing and cajoling the participants into believing that they would be creating memories for life and most of all, Head Dietician, Ms. Nidhi and her team at Max Vaishali, for curating all the ingredients, organizing them and executing the distribution flawlessly on the ground.

Breast-Cancer-Awareness-Month-Event-No-3-1280x1024.jpg

A super exciting Sunday morning with a blitz of pink, this time, with Women bikers and Breast Cancer Champions and Caregivers donning pink jackets and absorbing the calm of the morning interrupted by the powerful Vroom! Vroom! of their mean machines.

Flagged off by the 94 years old international athlete, Bhagwani Devi, along with Dr. Gaurav Aggarwal and Dr. Gopal Sharma. 100 bikers took to the street from Max Hospital Vaishali to Max Hospital Noida. As the pink stream vroomed ahead, it would have caught the attention of the bystanders- Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness. ?????

Empowered women- spreading the message of being breast aware. Doesn’t get better than this.??????

A huge shout out to Nandani Verma, Dr. Leena Biswas, Khushboo, Mansi, Chandni and all the other lady bikers. You are inspiring!!

Breast-Cancer-Awareness-2022-Max-Institute-of-Cancer-Care-Max-Hospital-Patparganj-Event-No.2-1280x1024.jpg

Physical activity is known to reduce the risk of breast cancer by almost 35-40% in a Norwegian study and outcomes are better after breast cancer in those women who exercise regularly!!

Happy to have been part of a run in the wee hours of 15th Oct 2022, where Max Hospital, Patparganj teamed up with DLF Mall Noida.

Breast-Cancer-Awareness-2022-Event-01-1280x1024.jpg

By 2025, the annual incidence of breast cancer in our country is likely to get to 2.25 lacs/ year. The percentage of advanced breast cancer is still an alarming 60-70%.

We have to keep the conversations going, with women and men alike, to up the awareness level and detect breast cancers early. At this unique event, hosted by Max Hospital Vaishali, we had women leaders, CEOs, managers, Principals, and entrepreneurs participate in an engaging panel discussion. While they put forth their views, their insights were sharpened by our experts and the stories of courage by our breast cancer champions. I am sure they went back enlightened with a promise to spread the word within their sphere of influence.???

Neeti Palta regaled us with her humor and superb timing taking potshots at our male counterparts.???. Absolutely on point!?

Thank you Dr Gaurav Aggarwal and Dr. Harit Chaturvedi along with Jatin Verma, Vanshikha, Shahzad Hussain, Sushila Kasana Jainer and team for making this beautiful event happen.

Ladies, you are truly the Voice of Change as we celebrate the Spirit of Pink at Max Healthcare, this October month. What we do may be a drop in the ocean but I can see the ripples forming.

The Voice of Change will only get louder!

A conference befitting ten years of ABSI!! I was there 10 years ago and this time was certainly special!!

Heartening to see young, enthusiastic breast surgeons thronging the place to share their experience (200 abstracts)and to gain from the wisdom of stalwarts from India and overseas… all for the patients’ good!??

A huge shout out to Aditi Chaturvedi, Karishma Kirti, Kirti Katherine Kabeer, Dr. Reetu Dogra, Dr. Pragnya Chigurupati, Garvit Chitkara and many more (memory fails me?), for painting an optimistic picture for the future of Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

Many congratulations to Dr. N Raghuram, Dr. Somashekhar, Dr. Ashwin Rajagopal, Dr. SVS Deo, Diptendra Sarkar, the overseas faculty and the entire team for putting this together!!
